Or are you a seasoned Mo veteran? Here are some pointers to groom and style your moustache during the start of the hairi- est month of the year. ■ Be prepared: As your first follicles break through the surface, choose the type of mous- tache that will grace your face by reviewing the inspirational Movember Style Guide at nz.movember.com. ■ Get the tools: It’s time to invest in the right tools for the job. A man committed to serious moustachery should have: a pair of barber scissors for precise trimming, a set of clippers for uniformity, a fine-toothed comb for guidance, a large mirror for a good view, a trusty razor, and a steady hand and a deter- mined mind. ■ Keep it neat: While you wait for the growth needed to sculpt the finest soup strainer, focus on making the most of your small Mo. Foam up your face, then run a sharp razor along everything except the glo- rious moustache, making it stand out. Movember party The grand finale for Movember in Auckland is the Gala Parté, where crews of locally grown moustaches can see out the month in style, celebrating all that is good and hairy. The notorious fancy dress parté is held to thank Mo Bros and Mo Sistas for 30 days and nights well grown. People raising $50 through the official Movember website campaign can claim a free double pass to the party. If they collect $100, they can receive a second double pass. Movember partygoers are encouraged to dress to suit your Mo or Mo Bro and sup- port your local Mo Growers as they battle it out for prestigious titles including Team Mo, Miss Movember and the ultimate title – Man of Movember 2014. Judges will be roaming the crowd looking for nominees, with judging for category win- ners taking place from 9.30pm. The Auckland Movember Gala Parté is on November 28 at The Nathan Club, 51 Galway Street, Britomart, Central Auckland. Door entry from 7pm is $10. Gender is the strongest and most consistent predictor of health and longevity. And unfor- tunately it’s not good news for men and boys, according to website nz.movember.com. It says a recent World Health Organisation article on men’s health states that ‘health outcomes among men and boys continue to be substantially worse than among girls and women’. ‘Yet this gender-based inequality in health has received little national, regional or global acknowledgement or attention from health policy makers or health care providers’. The article states on the whole, women are outliving men by an average of almost six years. It also argues that including both men and women in efforts to reduce these gender disparities would improve everyone’s health and well-being. “This is exactly why the Movember Foundation focuses on men’s health,” says nz.movember.com. “This is why Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from across the globe become a united voice every Movember, bringing much needed attention to the state of men’s health. “We’re proud of all that we’ve achieved, but we only have one definition of success – improving awareness levels of key health issues men face during their lives, and finding breakthrough solutions that produce tangible improvements in the lives of those dealing with prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.” Hail the mighty mo KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
