They may not have been at Flemington earlier this month, but the ladies and gents at Dannemora Gardens retirement village rose to the occasion, with gorgeous garments, flowers and feath- ers, and dapper suits and ties. The lady behind it all is no newcomer to organising such events, with a string of international beauty pageants to her bow. Resi- dent Adelaide Porter used her experience, calling on an impres- sive list of contacts. Two of New Zealand’s fashion industry legends, haute couture designer Patrick Steel, and milliner and fashion designer Kevin Berkahn, were joined at the judge’s table by model, actress, make up artist and recent My Kitchen Rules television chef participant Tracy Daisley. “I’m blown away by you all,” the elegant Adelaide lady told the residents. “It’s wonderful to see you look so stylish. You could all be at Melbourne.” Equally stylish assistant village manager Rebecca Mentor also pondered: “Will Dannemora Gardens ever be the same?” The glamorous line-up was vying for a range of prizes donated by some generous sponsors. The winners were: Best dressed female, Elizabeth Meiklejohn; best dressed male, Ross Botha; best dressed couple, Norm and Marion Brown; best female hat, Helena Botha; best male hat, Ross Botha; and the most creative outfit overall was scooped up by Shirley Nicholson.
