Allan and Linda Sargeant have owned Ambridge Rose Manor Private Hospital and Rest Home since 2002 and with many of their family members – they have cared for older people in a warm and professional manner. This year they bought Marvon Downs homestead and renamed the historic residence, Ambridge Rose Villa Rest Home. Locals looking for nurturing and family-style care for an older person, whether they require hospital-level More options to care for older family members Providing a fulfilling and caring environment for older people with increasing health needs takes specialised care and surroundings. For more than a decade, Allan and Linda Sargeant have developed Ambridge Rose Manor Private Hospital and Rest Home into a purpose-built home that delivers quality care with kindness and respect. “We have always been family focused – with our own family providing care at Ambridge Rose Manor and with our commitment to our residents and their families,” says Allan. They have looked to their residents and guardians for guidance on how to best meet their needs while ensuring healthcare provision is superior. “Linda had worked in aged care for many years and when we bought Ambridge Rose Manor in 2002 it was very different from the private hospital and rest home we have today,” says Allan. “Our ageing population is living for longer and many people have more complicated healthcare requirements, and we have developed Ambridge Rose Manor to care for people at this life-stage.” The contemporary environ- ment is spotlessly clean and most importantly, the healthcare teams are dedicated to providing a welcoming home where everyone is respected and treated with kindness. Family care From the day Allan and Linda started managing Ambridge Rose Manor they knew they would provide family-centre care for residents. As the home has grown and the residents’ needs have changed, they have remained true to their core principle and they consider all staff members as part of their extended family – helping other families. There is always a registered nurse on-site, the doctor has weekly rounds and is on-call. A dietician plans meals that are cooked in the Ambridge Rose Manor kitchen and carefully prepared for residents’ varied needs. There is an on-site laundry that ensures all clothing is clean and hassle-free for families. Ambridge Rose Manor lifestyle A private garden, several lounges and dining rooms, and the tranquil surroundings of the tidal Tamaki Estuary create a peaceful home. Residents enjoy daily activities that are designed to meet their needs, whether they need to remain in their room or are more mobile. “Even if a resident simply wants someone to share a cup of tea with them in the wee hours of the morning – our team can take care of this,” says Allan. Needs assessment for private hospital care Often the need for hospital-level care is unplanned and families may need to find a home quickly for their loved one. A district health board assessor will determine if a person requires assistance with eating, daily hygiene and mobility that requires a higher level of care. The qualified and experienced staff at Ambridge Rose Manor can assist families at this challenging time. Creating a home away from home is an on-going project at Ambridge Rose Villa and the residents are enjoying the restoration of the homestead to its former glory. Early in 2015, Allan and Linda Sargeant were excited to take ownership of the historical property, Marvon Downs, that has been a rest home for more than 40 years. The couple have spent more than a decade caring for older people at Ambridge Rose Manor in Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga. To extend their family-oriented care they wanted a quaint home with character. “We were looking for a unique property that we could develop into a boutique-style rest home, where residents feel like they are in family-home surroundings,” says Allan. Formerly known as Marvon Downs Rest Home, the name was changed to Ambridge Rose Villa Rest Home to include it as part of the family of care facilities owned and operated by Allan and Linda. “The history of Marvon Downs homestead is important to us and we’ve included the story on our website,” says Allan. The décor makeover started in the original entrance, dining room, bathroom and lounge, and will continue throughout residents’ rooms and facilities. Family care As well as Linda and Allan at the helm of Ambridge Rose Villa, residents are cared for 24/7 by dedicated healthcare assistants who love their work. The skilled team stays up-to- date with the latest caregiving techniques that keep the residents and staff members safe and healthy. Cooks use quality ingredients to provide nutritious, home- style meals in the villa kitchen and dietary needs and personal preferences are accommodated. There is also an on-site laundry to keep residents’ clothing clean and in good condition. Ambridge Rose Villa lifestyle The team at Ambridge Rose Villa plans fun activities that keep residents busy and involved with each other as well as community groups. “When musicians, toddlers, church groups and a tai chi instructor visit, it puts a sparkle in everyone’s eyes,” says Allan. “Families are encouraged to visit and we love putting on a barbecue every now and then to catch up with everyone.” Needs assessment for rest home care Families and guardians concerned about the lifestyle of an older person can request a needs assessment by their district health board and the care plan may recommend rest home care. Ambridge Rose Villa is an approved rest home care provider and is regularly audited. Residents are assisted with activities for daily living, some personal hygiene care and possibly mobility assistance. They would not require high levels of daily nursing and medical care. High standards of care and family values will always be core principles at Allan and Linda’s homes. 157 Edgewater Drive, Pakuranga. Phone 576 2590. 369 Pakuranga Road, Pakuranga. Phone 576 7917. HISTORY Marvon Downs homestead was built in 1931 for Archie and Gladys Millen on their 100- acre town supply dairy farm. Designed by popular architect of the era, Norman Wade, the homestead was considered one of Auckland’s most modern homes. The farmhouse had a shell driveway, made from cockle shells from Eastern Beach. Two large phoenix palm trees dominated the front lawn. The farm was sold in 1971 for residential subdivision and when Pakuranga Road was widened in the 1970s one of the large phoenix palms was replanted opposite the Pakuranga Plaza shopping centre. The other palm remains at the site. Marvon Downs farm, circa 1932.
