All around were warm smiles as the delicious aroma of breakfast and freshly made coffee wafted across the deck. I reflected on the myth that the French are not friendly towards English speakers; if this was ever true, CroisiEurope has truly rewritten that story! CroisiEurope is a substantive French family-owned cruise company, with more than 40 ships in their fleet. Although one of the largest and oldest cruise companies in Europe, the on-board atmosphere is relaxed, with a wonderful emphasis on experiencing the very best of French cuisine with fantastic table service for lunch and dinner – all served with a dazzling array of regional French wines or beer. I was on a cruise from the beautiful heritage city of Strasbourg in the Alsace region of France to cosmopolitan Amsterdam – six days of simple sailing along the waterways of the Rhine. Europe grew up along the rivers, so the ease of visiting historic cities and towns was made easy by the ship berthing in each of the historic centres we visited. The days were well designed with a mix of sailing lazily down the Rhine, with intriguing glimpses of history and daily life. There was always a great choice of indoor or places aboard from which to watch the world go by, depending ifyouwereinamoodfora cappuccino or a wine. Whatever the desire, it was all included and never far away! Once in port, a walking tour was often included or if there was something further away we would board our coaches and go off exploring. One highlight is the German village of Rudesheim. With a population of around 10,000, this scenic village is surrounded by vineyards seemingly planted on impossibly steep hills. The family-owned vineyard we visited is inter-generational, with the grapes still planted along the steep hills of the Rhine by hand. Entering their cave for a chat on local wine growing and then a sample of the local production was a great way to understand more about this boutique winery which covered only 20 acres. JH10262A-V2 TRAVEL Bonjour Robyn! Robyn Galloway, managing director of Innovative Travel, the NZ agent for European river cruise company, CroisiEurope, is full of praise for her own CroisiEurope experience cruising the Rhine River on the Gerald Schmitter. Sailing on the ‘Gerald Schmitter’ from Strasbourg, berthed at Cologne and sailing towards Amsterdam with many relaxing places, the ship board atmosphere was relaxed! ‘Gerald Schmitter’ and my lovely upper deck cabin aboard the ‘Gerald Schmitter’ Service with a smile. The crew on board were really friendly and welcoming!
