Each generation of people have their own preference when it comes to the colours they use to decorate their surroundings. The baby boomers – born from the early 1940s to the early 1960s – are extremely active and place high importance on pastimes and hobbies. They are looking to get the most out of life and aren’t afraid to surround themselves with comfort and luxury. The favourite colours of this age group tend to be more conservative and represent the traditional values cherished by this demographic. They use colours as a way of creating a relaxing environment that wards off stress. They like classic styles in positive colours. The X generation – born between the early 1960s and early 1980s – are characterised by their flexibility, realism and go-getter attitude. They’re looking for a warm, comfortable ambience, and objects from various cultural backgrounds play a big role in their decor. This generation prefers a neutral palette that’s offset by touches of Latin-inspired colours that make a rich and bold statement. They combine metallic shades with spice and cherry tones. They appreciate the soothing comfort of greens. The Y generation, described as the digital and Internet generation – born between the early 1980s and early 2000 – are energetic, ambitious, independent and individualistic. They like darker colours and also like to include the influences of special effects from technology and entertainment in the forms of luminous and complex colours. 14 — Botany and Ormiston Times, Thursday, October 29, 2015 www.times.co.nz TRANSFORM YOUR KITCHEN INTO THE KITCHEN OF YOUR DREAMS NEW KITCHEN OUT OF THE QUESTION?? Install a large, stylish mirror to make the room look brighter. It’s best to install lights on both sides of the mirror so a face is not obscured by shadows. It’s also a practical little trick for when makeup is being applied in the morning. Hang a favourite picture on the wall or display an object that relaxes people. Opt for darker shades for both the floor and the walls. For a Zen style worthy of a spa, go with white, cream or beige and add brightly coloured accessories. Choose a vanity with drawers, and install a pendant light. Use hooks instead of a towel bar, and choose a bath/ shower combination rather than a bath and separate shower. If a shower curtain is preferred, buy a curved rod like those used in hotel bathrooms to prevent the curtain always sticking. Opt for quality faucets made of solid metal.
