And so it has been for Andrew Maclaren, the former drummer and technical programmer for Stellar, the Kiwi group with singer Boh Runga that enjoyed brilliant success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with two number one albums, Mix and Magic Line. Maclaren lines up in the all-star 1980s show band 80sX that plays the Howick Club on Thursday, December 17, with the concert also featuring the cheeky talents of Andrew Fagan, who knows a thing or two about the 1980s. Fagan is the well-remembered make-up wearing, barefooted frontman of the much-loved Mockers, who charismatically delivered hit after hit and memorable performances to guide his band into the charts and hearts of the nation during a magnificent 10-year run. “For me, it was all that fantastic stuff we grew up on,” says Maclaren, recalling the music of the 1980s. “When we were in Stellar, we were all inspired and influenced by the great songs of that era.” Maclaren, along with Runga, and Stellar’s guitarist Andrew van de Geer and bassist Kurt Shanks, were also fortunate to work alongside a man who had produced global pop hits in the early 1980s. Their co-producer was Tom Bailey, who was in the British techno dance trio Thompson Twins alongside his Kiwi wife Alannah Currie, as the pair had relocated to Auckland as Stellar’s star was in the ascendancy. Maclaren says he uses all the experience and knowledge he’s gained from two decades in the music business to craft an 80sX show that is true to its musical roots. They’re fronted by the “youthful” stars Michael Murphy and Rebecca Wright, who Maclaren says provide the vital enthusiasm and energy for a band that people want to party with. Maclaren says all the pop-tastic new wave, new romantic and synth hits will be on parade, by the favourite artists of the 1980s, including Simple Minds, Devo, Belinda Carlisle, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Duran Duran, David Bowie, Blondie, Kim Carnes and many more. “Mocker man Andrew Fagan will keep the party rocking – and infiltrate the dance floor with Kiwi favourites, so look forward to a night of Pina Coladas, cheeky prizes, and a fantastic Christmas party.” Tickets are available from the Howick Club at $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Pre-concert Christmas buffet tickets are also available for an additional $25. music Party time, 80s style 80sX is a slick 1980s show band, featuring former Stellar drummer Andrew Maclaren, second right.
