Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices The memory of Santa arriving by helicopter or floating down on a parachute in the Pakuranga Plaza car park still burns bright in people’s minds. Shopping centre events were a “community celebration” back then with hundreds of excited children, parents and grandparents waiting for Santa, says Plaza acting general manager Christie Wrightson. These days, Santa arrives in a more orderly fashion at the Plaza, magically appearing in a box this year to children’s and parents’ delight. After 50 years in existence, there’s little the second oldest shopping mall in Auckland has not seen or done. Firstly owned by Fletchers and more recently Westfield Pakuranga, the historic hub has seen many changes over the years, says Christie. The former open-air town centre is something that resonates with people, she says. “People still remember the fountain outside where Farmers is – it was a fountain and next to it a little ice-cream kiosk. There are lots of fond memories.” Christie was brought on as a branding specialist when the mall was bought by investors Ross and Dallas Pendergrast of Ladstone Holdings and recalls how its original identity was revived. “ They said, ‘find a new name, don’t call it the Plaza’, but a chat to a few locals and we thought ‘how could we call it anything but?’” Locals were overwhelmingly in favour of the name, and passionate about the place which held so many memories such as wandering around the market stalls that is now the food court. It was at the Plaza where the concept for the Auckland Night Markets took off. For many, the Plaza is much more than a retail site, says Christie. “It has a place in the hearts of so many locals. And that’s what we’re trying to do – give it a heart.” In fact, the mall is big on giving with numerous competitions featuring throughout the year. “ This year one of the prizes we gave away was a trip to Singapore – a nod to our Singaporean-based investors [who bought the Plaza last year]. A lovely woman called Jes Magill [former Times employee] won that trip. “I’ve turned travel agent doing the bookings!” she laughs. Meanwhile, the Plaza, which is at the heart of the Pakuranga Town Centre Masterplan, is set for great things with resource consent application for stage 1A of the planned “urban village” to be submitted to council at the end of this year. But the community will remain at the heart of the development, says Christie. “Our tagline is Proudly Local, and we’ve always used the Times to get our message out there.
