Are they taught by teachers who are not just highly qualified but experienced? Techniques Music Academy (TMA) has built a name for its students’ high standard of classi- cal performance. It has also been popularly known for its expertise in the pop programme, using a comprehensive education system based on today’s electronic instru- ments. “Music is ever changing,” Marilou, the director says. “TMA offers music instruction to people of any age, level and ability. “We have a basic philosophy to bring the joy of music-making to as many people as possible and to encourage the creative potential of each of our students. “The fun environment makes it easier for young people to learn an instrument and for many adults to satisfy a lifelong ambition to play a musical instrument of their choice. “Choosing a musical programme greatly depends on what one wants to achieve musically in life. “At the academy, we want our students to learn to appreciate good music, be it classical or pop. We want them to experience both world of music if they want to. “I believe that a real musician has to be well rounded in their appreciation and performance. “I have been researching and looking for other pop programmes. I found out that the TMA’s Pop Course is the only one available that exposes students to a wide range of popular styles, classical themes, jazz, blues etc. “It also gives a solid founda- tion in the music fundamentals of reading, ear training, arranging, improvisation and theory.” At the academy, Individual and Group classes are offered. Group classes which are for pop students, are held in small groups of three and are done similar to a classroom situation, without the use of a headphone. There are two Junior pro- grammes for children aged 4 to 7 years old. Individual lessons are tailored depending on the programme the students are enrolled in. They are encouraged to sit in exams either at the ABRSM, Trin- itiy Guildhall or Trinity Guildhall Rock and Pop. Exams are however not a requirement for students to progress. Music enjoyment is also about performance thus TMA holds reg- ular concerts and their students are involved in community activities through music. These are opportunities for the students to perform and for their parents and the public to discover the many possibilities available at Techniques Music Academy.
