Having trimmed, clipped, shaved and snipped its way into the hearts of the public, Whiskerz in Cook Street Plaza has certainly earned a reputation that is seemingly a cut above the rest. Endearingly traditional but also loaded with character, the well-loved barbershop is the product of experience and savvy demonstrated by owner, Terry Horan. In fact, just over a year ago the bespectacled businessman acquired Howick Village Barbershop in the mall near the Howick Information Centre. Terry says he’s had his eye on the location for many years. “I could see the potential in it and when it came up more than a year ago I seized the chance.” Growing up down South and all around the country, Terry arrived in East Auckland in 1972. Attending Pakuranga College, he admits academic affairs weren’t his calling, and opted for an apprenticeship in Pakuranga in the late ‘70s. After hairdressing stints at Highland Park and Whangaparoa, Terry joined John Smith at Whiskerz. Eventually, Terry acquired the business, and John, who’s been barbering since 1967, remained on scene. A father of two teenagers, and husband to wife Jocelyn, who helps out with the business and is an author in her own right, Terry’s family life revolves around Howick. “It’s a neat place. I get out on my kayak and go fishing. I love my shellfish and it’s all here.” A supporter of numerous charities including Howick Coastguard and Howick Bowling Club, Whiskerz has also volunteered its services at shaving fundraisers. Add the thriving barber trade, and the Whiskerz crew’s hands are full. “We’ve never been so busy. We’ve always done well but now male grooming is big business. Our oldest client is 101 and the youngest one is 18 months so we cover everyone in between,” says Terry. Of course, part of the Whiskerz “X-factor” is communicated through quirky ads placed in the Times which have been a mainstay since the beginning. “When you’re starting out in a business you’ve got to advertise. It’s as simple as that,” says Terry. “It’s served us well, way better than all the other forms of advertising actually. We both get bang for our buck I like to think!” Terry in his man cave tucked away at the back of Whiskerz in Cook Street Plaza. The Times has a chat with the self-made man behind the blades as part of our business series.
