Pre-empting the next move of the country’s biggest offenders and staying ahead of their next strike in some really confronting situations is what makes her tick. Jeanette Burns, regional commissioner Northern Region, Department of Corrections says she finds it fascinating to know why people make those decisions and what the trigger is. Ms Burns is the first woman commissioner of the northern region, the largest in New Zealand in terms of staff, prisons and community corrections sites. Her warm smile makes it difficult to imagine that she deals with hardened criminals on a regular basis and was at the forefront of the riots at the Spring Hill Corrections Facility which caused millions of dollars’ in damage and nearly destroyed one of the officer’s areas in the northern Waikato prison. “I was called in when things began escalating,’ she says. “ You have to think logically without letting emotions get in the way. It is important to make the right decision from the information you have at that point of time. You have to trust the people around, change tack when the situation demands it and exude a sense o f calm so that everyone around you also feels the same, in a high risk situation. Calm in the face of danger Jeanette Burns, regional commissioner Northern Region, Department of Corrections at Mount Eden Prison. Times photo Wayne Martin LEADERSHIP TRAFFIC No excuse for speed police say I BY MARIANNE KELLY Astatic speed camera in Murphys Road has pinged one Times reader three times leading him to query why it’s placed at the bottom of a steep hill where a car gathers speed going down the hill in readiness to push up the other side. A police statement provided to the Times says the camera has been operational since December 2014 and its presence well publicised as part of the police static camera expansion project. “Given its obvious placement, with the specific purpose of encouraging safer speeds, police considers there shouldn’t be any reason for motorists to be ‘surprised’ if ticketed for speeding past the camera or have any excuse to miss its presence,” the statement says. “If people drive safely to the speed limit and the conditions, there is no reason to worry about receiving a ticket – or risking a crash.” An extensive process is followed to choose sites for the new static speed cameras, such as the one in Murphy’s Road, based on expert independent analysis, the statement says. Cameras are placed in locations assessed as being at high risk of speed-related crashes, including those where people have died or been injured. ®Turntopage2 BEACHLANDS MARAETAI WHITFORD CLEVEDON UU PAGE 10-11
