She started her tenure at the shop because she felt God had called her into the work. “I never expected to be here this long,” she says. “So I thought I’m going to retire this March. But I think he [God] has gone deaf on that. So I will work until he tells me to stop.” Not that she’s disappointed. “I don’t want to leave now. I love it here. It motivates me,” she says. “What would I do if I didn’t come here? It’s like a family. “I’m the mother hen and these [co- workers] are all my chooks, male and female.” As a member of the Eastgate congregation the Howick woman became involved from day one when the church bought the neighbouring building to establish an op shop. She volunteered to clear a garden between the church and the new site. In the beginning the small op shop handled clothing only. It was suggested why not help out? “I hated clothes,” she says. “I thought ‘this is not me’. I had never bought any label clothes so had no idea what was what. “Being tall, I used to make my own clothes. I never went clothes shopping.” So she was pleased when the church extended the shop to furniture and bric a brac and she moved over from the clothes section. “ We had no tables so the bric a brac was set out on sheets on the floor and the books were in boxes. It was hard really,” she says. She worked 30-hour weeks for a couple of years and became full-time 12 years ago. Now she’s the full-time assistant manager. “I love the excitement, the things that come into the shop, big or little things,” she says. “When someone is looking for something we say we will call them if we get it. And then it comes in. “It’s like Christmas every day. We never know what we will find.” Ms Bell is constantly amazed at peoples’ generosity and “the amazing amount of lovely high quality stuff that comes in”. “It blows me away how generous people are. We regard this as a recycling shop.” She’s also been there long enough for many regular customers to become friends. “I’ve seen pregnant ladies who have had their babies who go on to school and then college. A family came in one day and a young teenager turned to me and said ‘are you still here’?” The shop has many regulars, some who come in every morning to browse. “I love Saturdays,” she says. “It’s a highlight because it is our customers’ day off and they are more relaxed. There’s a different atmosphere in the shop.” In her spare time she helps with the church’s weekly community dinners. She knits booties and makes framed X-stitch Bible verses for the church’s missions. But her op shop customers are never far from her mind. She’s not averse to homework, taking newly- arrived jewellery home to sort, clean, label and price. Wendy Bell has been part of the Eastgate Christian Centre Op Shop since day one. The competition took place over Saturday and Sunday and saw some great skating, creative costumes and inspired performances and results. For many it was their first competition of the year and their first chance to showcase new routines. While skaters competing at a higher grade were looking for a technical score high enough to earn them a place at the National Championships in Christchurch in October, the lower grade skaters were using the opportunity to become familiar with performing by themselves and in front of an audience.
