Ph 271 8000 www.times.co.nz Responding to misinformation I UNDERSTAND that times are tough and household budgets are facing the squeeze. That’s why Auckland Council has focused on reducing costs to keep rates down. However, there’s a lot of misinformation about the rate changes many res- idents are facing. The fact is amalgamating the rating systems of the previous eight councils has caused the increases and decreases. One theory is that we should bring in a higher uniform annual general charge (UAGC), the set amount each ratepayer pays toward council services, to reduce rates. However, under the existing $350 UAGC, 127,165 residen- tial ratepayers face increases of more than 10 per cent, because of the impact of amalgamation. At $450, that number increases to 129,585, and at $750 to 170,847. The second theory is that council spending has caused the rates increases. That’s not cor- rect either, because even with a zero budget – achieved by cut- ting investment in your footpaths or local parks – many ratepay- ers would still face double-digit increases. What we have done is deliver $1.7 billion in savings while maintaining services and invest- ment in local communities, and tackling the big issues like the transport system. It’s important to note these projects will beneft the whole region by unlocking the rail network and unleashing the potential of our entire transport system, from east to west, to south. Implementing a single rating system has been a huge chal- lenge. What we’ve done is steer the fairest path through those changes. Len Brown, Mayor of Auckland Trees had to go RESPONSE to letter by Garry Law, of Dannemora (Times, Sep- tember 24). Botany Town Centre prides itself on its garden areas and outdoor spaces, providing well- maintained green spaces for shoppers. Through regular garden main- tenance, we’ve discovered that the popular and well-established trees lining Town Centre Drive have a genetic fault, resulting in an inherent weakness with the branches and tops of the trees. As Town Centre Drive is a high wind area, this has meant that over time the trees had suc- cumbed to harsher weather than they would ordinarily have. To avoid the damaged trees posing a health and safety issue to both customers and parked cars in Town Centre Drive, the centre, with the advice of an experienced arborist, took the decision to remove the trees. The centre is in the process of planting new, smaller trees that will be better suited to the area. In the interim, we’ve tempo- rarily planted dwarf conifers down Town Centre Drive and once a suitable replacement has been found, we’ll relocate these trees elsewhere on the site. Andrew Wadsworth, Botany Town Centre manager Welfare cuts I AGREE with Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson that I and other taxpayers should not pay a beneft to those who are evad- ing outstanding arrest warrants (Times, September 24). But could he explain how such people can be located to inform them that their benefts will be cut if they do not front up, but cannot be located to actually arrest them. Henry Perkins, Botany Downs Letters to the Editor can be sent to: The Editor, Times Newspapers, PO Box 259-243, Botany, Auckland 2163 or by email to editor@times.co.nz or fax (09) 271-8073. Letters should not exceed 200 words and should carry the name, residential address and contact telephone number of the author. Nom de plumes not accepted. SENSATIONAL SHREDDING Philly Karanil of the Rotary Club of Somerville Howick feeds waste paper through the new shredder donated to Ambridge Rose Manor. Photo supplied Letters to the Editor Featured letter each week will receive a Times pen. A BIG thank you to the Times for the story about Ambridge Rose Manor Private Hospital and Rest Home's paper recycling programme (Times, June 5). We requested funding for a new industrial-strength shredder that could handle the bulk quantity of paper that residents push through the machinery. The Rotary Club of Somerville Howick and an anonymous donor spotted the story and generously bought a new top-of-the-line shredder. There's no longer any down time, waiting for an overheated machine to cool down and the residents love non-stop shredding. No doubt Auckland Zoo loves the paper in its vet clinic, too.
