Blake scored a B Pass for Year 13 Cambridge Exam. "Just want to thank you for all the help and support. So stoked with the results!" Year 12 Arran scored 4 Merits and 4 Achieves for Year 12 Maths "You were a huge help." Year 11 Djondje scored 4 Excellents and 2 Merits for Year 11 Maths. "Thank you for helping me to achieve my goal." Travis gained 71% for his latest year 11 Cambridge maths exam after only 6 lessons. He came 9th in class after being near the bottom. Jordan scored 2 Excellents, 2 Merits and 1 Achieve. "Jordan went from failing everything at mid-year, to this!" TEACHING STYLE: My first goal is to help the students understand what is going on in class so that they can take an interest in it and not feel embarrassed. This usually involves giving them some background in the fundamentals of the topic and setting homework so that they gain confidence and don't forget how to do it by the next week. If they are ok with what is happening in class I can then cover any other topics which they had trouble with previously. Once all that is done we can start looking at exam papers and learning some exam techniques. I use the "Socratic" method of teaching wherein I mostly keep asking questions until the light dawns. (I love that moment when a smile slowly spreads across their face and I know that they have got it.) When students feel that they are working something out for themselves it keeps them more involved and they remember it for longer. If we think of the mind as a muscle, it also strengthens that muscle for when it is needed in exams, effectively increasing their IQ. Hence the comment of one of my students that: "Mr Porter explains things well and makes it fun!" COST: $600 PER STUDENT Location: Bucklands Beach -- close to Macleans College This summer boaties have the opportunity to learn more about popular anchorage spots in the Hauraki Gulf with Coastguard Northern Region’s popular education cruises. The evening cruises visit popular spots including Waiheke Island, the Coromandel, Mahurangi and Kawau and provide boating enthusiasts with information on hazards and practical safety tips. They also outline the interesting history of each stop and some of the fun recreational opportunities on offer such as walking tracks and prime fshing and diving spots. Coastguard Northern Region’s Maritime School Education Manager, Darren Arthur says the cruises, which have run for over 20 years, are just one way that Coastguard educates boaties about the importance of water safety. “The cruises provide us with a great opportunity to showcase some of the best spots in the Hauraki Gulf as well as give them some tips on how they can make the most of these holiday hot spots. “Although we like to make these cruises interesting and fun, safety is always top of the agenda so taking boating enthusiasts through practical safety tips and alerting them to the hazards in these areas is key. “To ensure that boaties are armed with as much knowledge as possible this summer, charts and reference books of the areas we visit will be available for purchase on the day.” An onboard gourmet sausage sizzle will also be available with money raised going to Coastguard’s fundraising efforts. All cruises, which are held aboard a Fullers Ferry, will board at the Fullers Ferry Downtown Terminal at 5.00pm with a departure time of 5.30pm and an expected return time of approximately 10.00pm. The frst cruise heads out to Waiheke and the Coromandel on November 27 followed by the cruise to Mahurangi and Kawau which takes place on December 4. Fees for the cruises start at $60.00, however Coastguard members can participate for a discounted price.
