Natasha Ornik, Miss Jetts Fitness Howick, a 20-year-old fnancial serv- ices customer service consultant, won this year’s title. “I didn’t expect to win, I did it for fun,” she says. “But the experience has defnitely built my confdence, how to talk to people and have a stage presence. “I thank Val for the opportunity and my sponsor, also the girls. I would not have got the most out of it without them.” Miss Ornik, of Botany, came to New Zealand from Kenya eight years ago and was educated at Somerville Intermediate and Botany Downs Secondary College. She has a certifcate in fne arts and design and would like to pursue a career in fashion marketing, but is presently enjoying the fnancial busi- ness environment. While the event was a thrill for Miss Ornik, it also belonged to Mrs Lott, who has announced she will hand over the pageant’s reins to her second in command, choreographer Sarah McIntyre. But, Mrs Lott says she’ll remain on the lookout for potential contestants. Ms McIntyre, who won the 1993 crown, says Mrs Lott has given so much of her time and energy help- ing girls to experience pageants and modelling. “She’s direct, but she also has a heart of gold. She enjoys life to the fullest and loves working with young people. “I thank her for the experience, wisdom and love we have shared over the last 20 years. And I look forward to continuing her legacy as director of Miss Howick.” Another former Miss Howick, Melanie Butzbach, says “Val has cre- ated a legacy she can be proud of”, while Zeisha Fremaux attributes her confdence “and smile” to Mrs Lott. “What Val has done for us all is a great achievement. “I got my crown by meeting Val and she has helped me through my life since. She’s like my second mum, my rock.” There comes a time to step down, said Mrs Lott, at the pageant show held at DiWine Restaurant and Bar in Howick. “It’s hard when it’s been your life. Apart from 25 years with Miss How- ick, I have been involved in fash- ion parades and promotions for 50 years.” As a result of contestants’ fun- draising, a cheque for $1600 was presented to World Vision. The money will help fund Generous, a 13-year-old girl in Uganda for three years. The contact came through last year’s Miss Howick runner-up Char- ney Rooza, who helped host this year’s event. Inspired by giving a boy, scaveng- ing outside a South African burger bar, money to buy food, Miss Rooza now works with World Vision. Mrs Lott said this year’s donation was different, because “we know our girl and we can all write to her”. Other Miss Howick 2012 win- ■ners were: First runner-up, Alex- andra Vetrov (Miss Good Guys); second runner-up, Tayla Glogoski (Miss Basalt); Miss Friendship, Alexandra Vetrov; beautiful hair and swimwear awards, Shelly Pretorius (Miss Hairsay); Miss Personality, Janay Smith (Miss Glamour Hair and Makeup); evening wear award, Rebakah Hawley (Miss Four Seasons’ Garden Care); Miss Charity Queen, Kendra Schiphorst (Miss Prospect); Miss Photogenic, Anel Kieser (Miss Times Newspapers). The People’s Choice award, selected from Times Newspapers online voting was Courtney Barlow (Miss DiWine Bar and Restaurant).
