Not being able to swim may mean missing out on fun summer activities such as birthday swim parties, snorkelling, windsurfing and kayaking. But thanks to dynamic East Tamaki swim school, Splash Central, everyone from babies to children and adults can learn to swim with confidence, giving them the freedom to enjoy summer in its full glory. Boasting a purpose-built facility with a year-round heated pool, Splash Central has been training and teaching locals how to swim since 2004. The pool is totally chlorine and bromine-free and, instead, Splash Central uses geosil, a Swiss product that releases only water and oxygen in the disinfecting process. In contrast, chlorine and bromine release harmful by-products that eat at the skin and swim togs. “People who swim in our pools find their togs last for ages – even our instructors who are in the water every day do not have to replace their swimming togs due to disintegration!” Bina Riedlshah, co-owner of Splash Central explains. Classes are kept small and personal, with groups ranging from three in each class to a maximum of six, depending on age and skill level. “Being private, we can also offer one-on-one introduction lessons for more timid swimmers.” The Learn to Swim programme takes children through all stages, from building water confidence to learning the correct technique of all four strokes. The three squad classes following the Learn to Swim programme focus on technique and endurance. After swimming in the highest level, Piranha (a 1 hour lesson), many squad swimmers choose to continue with the swim school for fitness if they are not interested in the competitive swimming. Alternatively, they feed into swim clubs with great results. Locally owned and run, Splash Central is all about giving children the best start in life. Bina says: “We’re big believers in giving back to the community. Right now, for every new swimmer who signs up with us, $25 goes to their choice of kindy or school. This is for all new swimmers, babies through to adults, who sign up for at least five regular priced lessons with us.” Swimming with friends has never been easier at Splash Central. For every successful referral, supporters of Splash Central receive $20 towards a holiday programme or swimming accessories. And friends new to Splash Central automatically receive $20 off their lessons!
