That's very important and it's a big part of why I'm involved." Last year's showcase saw 20 paintings and 13 pottery works sold, earning more than $20,000 for the junior sailing academy. About 40 artists are taking part this year, including award-winning painter and Eastern Beach resident Merv Appleton. Exhibition co-organiser Raewyn Neale says the money earned provides a big boost to the area's future sailing champions. "Over the years our yacht club has been served with distinction by a number of members, both nationally and internationally," says the Bucklands Beach resident. "They are people such as Bruce and Barbara Kendall, Aaron McIntosh, Ross Field, Brad Jackson and Leah Newbold. These sailors got their start at BBYC." As well as being able to view the art, people who go to the exhibition's opening night can use Mrs Webster to help them pick out a work for their home or o ce. She's more than willing to speak to potential art buyers about what they like or are looking for. "People are sometimes uncomfortable buying a piece of art," Mrs Webster says. "I'm willing to help people learn how to recognise a good painting, so they don't get tired of it. It's good for people to know the artists in their own community. "There are good established artists in East Auckland, whose work is worth buying. It doesn't have to come from a high-end gallery." The showcase is open 9am-7pm daily from November 7-11 at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Ara-Tai, Half Moon Bay. Club patron Mick Neale opens the proceedings with wine and nibbles at 6.30pm on November 6. Entry is free and all works are for sale. By Chris Harrowell AN OUT of control vehicle left the road and smashed through several wooden fences before colliding with a two-storey brick house. The car, driven by a male teen- ager, veered across the centre line at speed and crashed into a house in Howick shortly after 9pm last Thursday. The teenager is understood to be a relative of a prominent Auckland community leader. St John Ambulance paramed- ics attended the incident in Ridge Road, along with police and fre- fghters from the Howick station. The owner of the brick house, who asked not to be identifed, was watching TV with his daughter when the vehicle hit his home. His wife and son were in another part of the house at the time. He immediately phoned emergency services on 111. “I heard a loud bang and the lights went off,” says the man, who works as a marine surveyor. “The car had run over a power box at the front [of the prop- erty] and struck the corner of my house. “I got a torch and walked out- side to see what had happened. My neighbours also came outside.” The resident approached the driver of the vehicle and his sole passenger, asking if they were injured. “He said he wasn’t hurt. “The police, paramedics and fre service all arrived very quickly and they took the boys inside the ambulance. “They were talking to him and checking him out. “Firefghters cordoned off the side of the property because there were exposed wires.” The man’s fence was obliterated in the crash, with shattered pieces of timber flling his front section and wood and broken glass cover- ing his vehicle. A piece of broken fence board landed up to 15 metres away. The driver of the car, believed to be a Subaru Legacy or Forrester, visited the scene of the accident on Friday. “He said he realised how lucky he was, and silly,” the man says. “He told me he would like to help clean up the mess, but I said it’s out of our hands now. It’s up to the insurance company. “We hear cars speeding past the house on weekends, but we’ve never had an incident like this before. “I’m just happy the boys are safe. They were shaken up. I hope the driver has learnt something from this.” The driver, who’s believed to be aged 17, was spoken to by police at the crash scene but not arrested. Sergeant Jeremy Field, of the Counties Manukau East Police strategic traffc unit, says: “No charges have yet been laid. “The Counties Manukau Police serious crash investigation unit attended and statements were taken from several people on Thursday night. “The investigation into the crash is ongoing. “Speed was a factor, but whether alcohol was or not is yet to be determined.” Broken timber and damaged properties mark the path taken by a car that crossed the road's centre line in Howick last Thursday night.
