Starting out with just one newspa- per, the Howick and Pakuranga Times -- still the group's flagship publica- tion today -- the company has never stopped evolving, its progress influ- enced by ever-changing technology and market expectations. Over the years, other print publi- cations have joined and departed the stable -- papers such as the former Bays and Remuera Times which oper- ated for some 25 years, East City News, Midweek and Tamaki Times. At the outset Howick and Pakuranga Times was printed on a Wednesday then moved to a Monday. By 1991 this paper was being pub- lished twice a week -- Monday and Thursday. Then, in 2003, with burgeoning residential growth to the south west of central Howick, a new paper was launched -- the Howick and Botany Times, published on a Wednesday. These two community papers remain at the heart of the business with Howick and Pakuranga Times being delivered to some 36,000 homes twice a week and the Howick and Botany Times being delivered to an additional 12,000 once a week. Between 1991 and 2009 all Times Newspapers Ltd publications were printed inhouse by sister company Business Media Press. With technology nowhere near as advanced as it is today, the early papers were sent by bus to Warkworth for printing. In time, it became apparent that having an onsite printing press would offer many advantages. Finally, in 1991 a second-hand Harris printing press, formerly owned by the Bay of Plenty Times, was purchased and delivered to the Times new address in Union Road, Howick. This location was the company's fourth home -- the Times started out upstairs in Rices Mall, then relocated to two Fencible Drive addresses before moving to Union Road. Seven years ago the firm moved into a new purpose-built complex, Times House, in East Tamaki. Over the years the press was upgraded and eventually was able to print in full colour but with the rampant growth of new technolo- gies and the arrival of digitalisation, it was time to re-evaluate the need for its own printing company. With printing processes through- out the country being consolidated, Business Media Press was sold to Horton Media in 2009 beginning another era in TNL's history. From an editorial department still using typewriters in 1990, and a production department which was reliant on manual 'paste up' of pages before going to print, TNL had, by its 40th year, become one of the most advanced newspaper companies in New Zealand. It was the second newspaper in New Zealand to introduce digital photography. It was the first com- munity newspaper to launch its own website and is among the first of New Zealand papers to send out a full digitalised version of the paper to its readers. It is, in fact, at the forefront of the industry in its use of digital technol- ogy and online media. This progressive attitude has been reflected in the many awards and accolades won by company products over the past 40 years. Some of the most prestigious include: • The Qantas Award for Best Com- munity Newspaper in New Zealand (H&P Times) • The Qantas Award for Best Junior Reporter (H&P Times) • The Community Newspapers Association (CNA) Award for Best All Round Community Newspaper in New Zealand (won several times over) (H&P Times) • Multiple CNA awards for report- ing, photography and overall pro- duction (All community papers) • PANPA Award for best website (H&P Times) • Reay and Brian Neben become Rotary Paul Harris Fellows • Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Award for Busi- l Community (ﬁnalist in three other categories) • Gold medal in the New Zealand Pride and Print Awards (H&P Times was entered in the web offset/coldset newspaper category). While community news remains the core service of the company, TNL is all too aware of the need to keep moving forward. As a result, TNL has moved firmly in a new digital direction with online products becoming a key part of the business. The group's ability to achieve so much in a time of competitive media can be credited to the company's firm philosophy of identification with local aspirations, including tak- ing an active role in the community, and recognition of developing tech- nology providing new opportunities. Using a network of contacts and industry associations, the group has positioned itself at the forefront of publishing technology. Its global associations have ena- bled it to be constantly ready to take advantage of industrial and techno- logical progress while its local ties remain a strength.
