The Times, and its affiliates, have been proud clients of Barley Insurances since its founding in 1998 and are continuing to thrive under its guidance. But this relationship dates back further than 1998. Founder of Barley Insurances, John Barley, was already in cahoots with TNL owner Reay Neben while he was working for Westrays, formerly known as Hogg Robinson. Twenty years ago Reay, having just acquired a printing press for the business, was looking for appropriate insurance cover. Reay says John was recommended to her initially and made such an impression that she decided to continue being his client when he branched out on his own with wife, Suzanne. John recalls the day he told Reay he was leaving Westrays. Reay's response to John was: "Where are you right now?" His reply: "At work in my office." "Don't you move," she said. Fifteen minutes later, Reay was in John's office standing alongside his desk. "Now, usually, that's about a 30-minute drive from her office to mine -- Howick to Ellerslie," John recalls. Reay then asked: "So what are you going to do John?" "Ummm, well ummm...." was the response. "I wasn't ready for these questions," says John today. "Reay then sat down in the spare chair and put it on the table: 'you're going out on your own and we are coming with you'." Since then, John says he has seen Reay as an interesting, silent mentor. "At two thirds of my height, she is a tank full of vigour that is just so full of essential per- sonality and positivity which is inspiring and influential. So thank you, Reay, for your guidance and inspiration and all the best for the next 40 years." And through his advice, John is still helping people and businesses, something he has been motivated to do since enter- ing the industry when he was 18. "Continuity of service is really important," says the former How- ick resident. "We strive to under- stand people's specific needs and give advice regardless of whether it's asked for." This extra advice is what Reay finds particularly admirable. "When we first ventured online, it was a world we didn't know but John would urge us to consider areas that we would never have thought of. This gave us the opportunity to really protect ourselves." To John, it was about being tenacious. "We're prepared to continually drill for information and find areas of risk." And it is this tenacity that Reay values in their working relationship. "He will fight for you. I don't have to worry about anything, he just takes care of it. We have a great working relationship." Even for personal insurance, John has been the go-to person for Reay. "We've always rung John any time of the day or night. When our property was flooded, it was John I rang while my feet were in water. It's instant action, so we feel well protected with him in charge." After many years of working with businesses such as Reay's, John has gained immense satisfaction. "It's been very rewarding. I've been able to have an impact and influence on many people's lives and the future remains very exciting." Ensuring the very best "Thank you, Reay, for your guidance and inspiration and all the best for the next 40 years." The long and the short of it -- Reay Neben and John Barley celebrate a successful business relationship.
