Friends and family may feel uncomfortable but Linda Sargeant, co-owner of Ambridge Rose Manor Private Hospital and Rest Home says they encour- age visitors to spend time with the residents. "It is good for everybody's well-being and shar- ing a walk or cup of tea with an older person is a rewarding experience," says Linda. "When a person's memory is failing they often recognise people in old photographs, which can be a talking point for visitors." Furniture or special pictures from home make residents' rooms homely and can spark a conver- sation. Helping a loved one eat a special treat from home -- stewed rhubarb is a favourite for some -- is a thoughtful and caring task for visitors. Activities at Ambridge Rose Manor are fun for children and the more active older folks enjoy some youthful, friendly competition during their sports and games. The activities team has a walking group twice a week, which friends and family can join, especially if they are keen to push a wheelchair for the less agile folks. "A good sense of humour and patience are essential and people should never under estimate the joy that comes from visiting an older person," says Linda. For information about aged care, call Allan or Linda Sargeant at Ambridge Rose Manor.
