Therefore, it was appropri- ate that Cook the Books should be the venue for the launch of new vegetarian cookbook, The Ultimate Vegetarian Collection compiled by Dame Alison Holst in collaboration with her son, Simon. I was particularly chuffed to see this latest masterpiece from Dame Alison, whose books I first bought as a young bride back in the ’70s. However, in those halcyon days of dinner parties when we made our own paté and cheese sticks, prepared a three or per- haps four-course meals then followed up with homemade rum balls and truffles, we w always on the look-out for the rich and luscious. Today’s often healthier approach to eating, is quite different from 40 years ago yet this latest book from the Holst kitchen, manages to meld wholesome with heavenly. Amazingly, Alison completed her 100th cook- book last year, 30 of them co- authored with Simon! Interestingly, other Hols vegetarian cookbooks — Ver Easy Vegetarian, Meals withou Red Meat and Meals withou Meat — have sold more tha 250,000 copies. I expect th new book to also sail out of book stores especially with Christmas almost on us. The Ultimate Vegetarian Col- lection is a compilation of the best from all of Alison and Simon’s books. While the recipes are indeed tantalising, many complemented by beautiful photographs, what I also lo easy to a With pes are to read. With the focus on economi- cal, easy, tasty meals, this book offers meal solutions for family and friends. With more than 400 recipes, divided into 14 chapters, such as breakfasts, light lunches, beans, pastries, and desserts and sweets, there are fabulous options for virtually every occasion. The book also provides a use- ful nutritional and pantry guide as well as a glossary and compre- hensive weights and measures guide.
