Having taken the world by storm, the not-so-humble pie finally reached New Zealand shores early this year when Whoopie Kitchen opened across town in Grey Lynn. For those in the dark, a whoopie pie is a small spherical cake that looks like a cross between a ginger kiss and a macaron. It is made from two cake domes sandwiched together with a silky cream. But unlike a ginger kiss or a macaron, the flavours aren't just limited to ginger and an almond and meringue base. In fact, the wonderful world of whoopie has a myriad flavours to choose from including white velvet and passionfruit, hokey pokey, chocolate, and the summery lemon, lime and coconut. Legend has it the whoopie pie was conceived in 1920s' America when Amish women baked these sweet treats for their farmer husbands and sons who would exclaim "Whoopie!" on discovering it in their lunchboxes. Far from being farmer fare, the whoopie pie today has evolved into a chic, gorgeous delight that would rival any cupcake or macaron. Obviously, this city girl had to trudge along to find out what these were all about. Impeccably decorated and styled, the cute little store gave me a real sugar buzz. First up -- red velvet -- a real stunner and the most popular, I'm told. With its deep red hues and cream cheese filling it tasted every bit as delicious as it looked. Moving on to the peanut butter chocolate chunk, the marshmallow raspberry and chocolate and the banana, walnut and salted caramel, every single bite was heavenly. Each cake was decadently dense and perfectly formed -- not a crumb out of place. Of course, no visit to Whoopie Kitchen is complete without tasting its divine Italian hot chocolate. Smooth and rich, the Whoopie team's rendition of hot chocolate was more than deserving of the title of 'Food of the Gods' and had me in total ecstasy. Not to mention, the sprinkle and flavouring bar on the side -- a hot chocolate connoisseur's dream! Chilli, cinnamon, vanilla, and orange peel can all be added to one's heart desire. Whoopie Kitchen is surely a gift from the gods. And now, with impeccable, festive whoopie pie embellishments, whoopie pie packs are bound to make great Christmas gifts. What's more, you can have them personalised too! There's nationwide delivery, so you can be sure it will be a Christmas for making 'whoopie'! Whoopie, it's Christmas Whoopie! Thanks to Whoopie Kitchen, the Times has three festive packs of six Whoopie Pies on the table for two lucky winners. To enter the draw for a 'pie' pack just visit www. times.co.nz then click on the competitions link and fill in the form. One entry per person; entries close 12 noon December 19. Winner notified by phone or email and must be able to pick up from the Times office in East Tamaki.
