The ancient Romans also had ginger's number way before the world really began to appreciate this spicy herb. Yep, ginger was widely used by the Romans and it was very expensive -- one pound (453g) of ginger was equivalent to the price of a whole sheep. After the fall of the Roman Empire, its benefits became somewhat lost but re-emerged when Europe re-discovered it during the era of the spice trade. Of course, ginger has influenced the culinary and medicinal history of man since ancient China where it was used in traditional Chinese medicine to help cure or prevent a variety of health problems and also to add flavour in cooking. Wars, too, were waged and entire dynasties rose and fell with the objective of seizing ginger especially during the time when trade in exotic spices was integral to the world's economy. Modern day New Zealand acknowledges ginger has many benefits -- we might use it to calm a queasy stomach or to add piquancy to a stir-fry. We are happy to munch on ginger nuts or ginger gems, mix a tipple of brandy with a dash of ginger ale or, on a hot summer's day, down a tall glass of homemade ginger beer. The list of its uses is long and varied. Now, just in time for summer, there's a new player on the ginger scene and it has more kick than our dancing redhead had! Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer, (a much praised UK brand) is a spicy, refreshing drink made using a traditional process and remains true to the same exotic recipe which was first crafted by John Crabbie & Co in Edinburgh, back in 1801. Still proudly produced by the Crabbie clan, it was a runaway hit during the European summer. Already dubbed the 'new cider' it's the perfect refresher for both nostalgic drinkers who remember the traditional ginger beer of yesteryear and the younger set looking for the next big thing. A zesty tipple made from four secret ingredients this secret combination is steeped for six weeks with real ginger from the Far East, then carefully blended and bottled. Perfect for sipping by the pool or at a barbecue with friends, Crabbie's really hits the spot and is super refreshing in a pint glass over ice with a slice of lemon or lime. Times tested it on several readers who all gave it the thumbs up. Crabbie's is available nationwide exclusively to Liquorland and select on-premise outlets with an RRP of $6.26 per one 500ml bottle. New drink hot to trot Win a 12-pack of alcoholic ginger beer To give our readers a New Year pick-me-up, the Times has a gift pack of 12 bottles of Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer to give away to one lucky reader (must be 18 years or older). To enter the draw simply visit www.times.co.nz then click on the competitions link and fill in the form. One entry per person; entries close January 8, 2013. Winner notified by phone or email.
