Appar- ently SYNC doesn’t recognise my wife Sharron’s “Al, what’s this rubbish you’re listening to” as a standard voice command. The second slice of big Focus- favoured news is the ST hot hatch, which will be music to the ears of any enthusiastic driver. Changes to the balance of the Focus range (which is carried over from 2012) are minor equip- ment and styling enhancements. These are mostly due to pro- duction moving from Europe to Thailand. But ST (which replaces the XR5) is an entirely new song and dance. Powered by a 184kW 2.0- litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine, the new Focus ST offers blistering performance supported by a superb chassis. ST rides 10mm lower than other Focus models, and has up-rated suspension components – includ- ing unique suspension knuckles and a new anti roll bar design. Bigger brakes are standard, as is a trick new power steering sys- tem. The steering’s variable ratio not only increases the level of assist- ance at low speed, it also enables the driver to turn almost full lock without having to reposition his or her hands on the steering wheel. A half-day test drive around Lake Taupo quickly (and I mean quickly!) showed that ST’s rapid acceleration isn’t so much due to the 184kW of power, but rather the 360Nm of torque that’s avail- able from just 2000rpm. This thing pulls like a steam train, and sounds great doing it thanks to a nifty ‘sound symposer’ that relays the engine sound directly from the intake into the cabin. But unlike SYNC’s voice activa- tion, the engine’s music is control- led by the driver’s right foot. If you’re thinking about get- ting yourself a new Focus ST for Christmas, forget it! All 40 examples of this $53,490 fve-door hot hatch arriving by the end of the year are presold, and orders are being taken for early 2013 delivery. Recaro sports seats have partial leather trim, length adjustment and cushion tilt. Spot ST by its side skirts, a unique rear bumper with prominent di user-style vents in the lower fascia, and roof spoiler.
