Tell me about it -- Helen Perry 271 8036 or firstname.lastname@example.org Dining and Leisure with Helen Perry The last weeks before Christmas were so busy there was little time to check out all the new restaurants that opened around the district in the last quarter of 2012. But, amaz- ingly I managed to duck into a few… as well as some not so new to town but new to me. Here are just three! Gouemon Japanese Restau- ■ rant, now in new premises at Half Moon Bay Marina, was a revela- tion with a reasonably priced menu offering a range of typical Japanese dishes. Loved the teriyaki chicken (please don’t say, ‘so passé’) and thoroughly enjoyed the teppanyaki prawns too. Good service, BYO wine, comfortable surrounds and, of course a lovely view, what a tasty bite! DiWine Bar & Restaurant ■ (Uxbridge Rd, Howick) – snaffed an online voucher for two mains and two wines for just $39 and went forth in trepidation. This site has had its problems but now looks tobeontheupandup. Removing an internal wall, which had previously left dining in a dark, rear corner, has thrown light and space into the venue. Seated at a window table, albeit overlooking the carpark, but nevertheless ele- vated and active, was a pleasure. The kitchen did pretty good too. We shared a plate of Cajun calamari with salad ($14) cheap and cheer- ful, followed by a mixed kebab grill (chef’s signature dish, $32) for hubby which did the trick for him. My chicken kefta ($21) was just a little dry but the mustard sauce added a palatable kick. Afterwards we even gave beer-pong a go! With a diverse and very reason- ably priced menu encompassing pasta, pizza, traditional European dishes and Middle Eastern too, we thought DiWine was good value. What’s more, with a drinkable house wine at $8 a glass, it suited our tight budget. The owners have defnitely worked hard to revitalise the premises giving it a great makeo- ver. I noted about six other cou- ples dining in when we were there early in the week and spoke to one lot who gave their meal a smiley thumbs up. At the end of the day our frst experience was good enough to take us back again. In fact, there were a couple of sharing platters I really would like to try and while we couldn’t manage a dessert frst time round, another look at these is also warranted. All up, a satisfac- tory night out. Dum Mast Indian Restaurant ■ & Bar (corner of Fortunes and Pakuranga Rd). Popped in here on a Sunday evening to fnd a large group having a whale of a time – possibly a Christmas work do or similar. We nearly didn’t stay because I thought the kitchen would be so busy we might have to wait an age. Not at all. We were warmly welcomed, seated near the sunny, sheltered outdoor area and in no time had received water, menus and glasses for our BYO wine. Because we had eaten a late lunch we opted for only a shared mixed entree platter ($22) even though hubby lingered over the curries trying to convince himself he had room for this extra. I con- vinced him this was not the time of year to pack in more as there was so much more to come! Despite the big crowd, we chat- ted normally and enjoyed the back- ground music. Décor was fresh and pleasant if a little stark. The wait area, however, was most attractive and comfy. Our mixed platter, which arrived in no time at all, delivered to us two huge vegetarian samosa, (very tasty; very flling) onion bhaji, prawns and malai tikka reshmi (chicken). To put it bluntly, we were stuffed by time we fnished. In all, we thought Dum Mast was an excellent neighbourhood res- taurant where we found the serv- ice friendly, the food good and the premises light and airy. With the district home to such a wealth of Indian restaurants (and other ethnic venues too) locals have a plethora of choice. I suggest currying up to this newbie to test the Dum Mast sauces. A frst expe- rience just might make the decision of which venue to choose in future a darn sight harder. Around the traps... A lighter, brighter interior augers well for the future of DiWine.
