4 --- A Times Newspapers Supplement, January 2013 www.times.co.nz LifeStyle & Leisure Kick back, relax and take time to enjoy life ByHelenPerry My mother always encouraged kindness, a principle I’ve tried to stick too; well, most of the time anyway. But after hearing all the gushing comments about the latest Bond movie, Skyfall, this ‘Pollyanna’ with a penchant for espionage and action was, for once, feeling less than benevolent when it came to a Bond who was more beggared than bedazzling. The ravers rate Skyfall, as ‘fantastic’, ‘fve star’ and ‘the best Bond yet’. What piffe! Talk about falling from the sky, this one certainly fell from a great height in my estimation, then crashed and burnt. Yep, there was plenty of action but, ho-hum, how many times have we all been subjected the fght scene atop a moving train with tunnel dodging to boot? Then there’s the little question of Bond’s survival after his massive fall into a raging river – we never do hear how that is achieved. And what’s wrong with this ageing Bond? Here he is, disappearing into the woodwork – aka typically beautiful arms of a woman – for months on end because he was miffed by the “take the shot” call. For James’ sake! The man’s supposed to be a professional, a Government employee; yet in Skyfall, there he was skulking and sulking because they didn’t trust him to do the job; which in all truth, wasn’t looking likely anyway! Finally, when he does return he is totally unft, physically and mentally and can’t even take a shot himself. Yet here’s the country’s most prestigious intelligence organisation sending him back into the feld. Now that’s intelligent! Then, honestly, M’s dash across a deserted moor had to be one of the most feeble attempts at originality I’ve ever seen. There was the head of MI6 (Judi Dench) weaving her way with old timer Kincade to the only building in sight – talk about cover uncovered! – and waving a torch for all to see. M really needed to take a leaf out of Jack Reacher’s book – there’s a man who can burrow deep into a barren landscape and lie motionless for hours! Need I say more? It was inevitable that baddie, Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), who is actually charismatic in the role and probably saves this movie from total disaster, would follow Bond (as everyone knows, played by Daniel Craig) to his childhood home. And that the formerly grand chateau would be destroyed in a dynamic blast. Of course, we knew from the outset James would come out on top, but such an end for M? Bring back Fleming, I say! Bond plot falls fat... Well now you can!
