The Pakuranga choral Society will present Vivaldi’s Gloria and Gabriel Faure’s famous Requiem at All Saints church, Howick, 2pm, Sunday, May 26. The Gloria is a work of rejoicing with lively rhythms and exciting variations. Vivaldi wrote it in Ven- ice about 1716, possibly to celebrate a Venetian victory. However, after his death it lay undiscovered until the late 1920’s when it was found buried among forgotten manuscripts. The Requiem, by contrast, con- tains music of the greatest sensitiv- ity, coming from a high point of the Romantic era. it contains that won- derful soprano solo, the “Pie Jesu”. Both works are old friends of the choir who, with accompanist Valerie Sowerby, and led by highly experienced conductor Nicho- las Forbes, intend to display all the qualities which these works demand; accuracy, balance, clarity and beautiful tone quality. Joining the choristers for this concert are Michael Bell, resident organist at St Matthews in the city, who has accompanied the choir previously; Timothy carpen- ter, baritone and Dilys Fong, alto; Fiona Tibbles and Luana Prictor, all sopranos who are extensively involved in choir work and musical studies generally. Promising an afternoon of out- standing music, this is one concert which should not be missed. Ticket sales at the door – adults $25, sen- iors, $20. – Hal Marryatt Diary concert date i cAN’T believe it – choi’s korean BBQ Restaurant in Sommerville Shopping court is celebrating its 18th birthday. we had just built a new home in Meadowlands when the restaurant opened and i have fond memories of dining there. The table top cooking was quite a novelty and we enjoyed it immensely. But having moved from the area some years ago it is a long time since i last dined at choi’s. However, this anniversary has prompted me to rethink a visit to the long-standing venue. i see the set menu table barbe- cue, which is usually $42 for two people, is on a a birthday special of just $34 for two – sounds good to me and the perfect time to return and see if the restaurant is as good as i remember. Kiwi chefs, got game? BeFoRe man became a farmer, settling down to grow crops and (eventually) sit with his feet parked up on the coffee table, drinking back a lager and goggling the box, he was a hunter. Harkening to those bygone days of exploring the world’s backyard, revelling in the glories of nature, before shooting some of it to bring home and lay on a plate, the Mon- teith’s Beer and wild Food chal- lenge is a true test for kiwi chefs. Now, as the 16th edition of the annual contest fires up, keen cooks from Monteith’s outlets are being asked to throw their hats into the ring. To be eligible for entry, each dish must feature readily-availa- ble wild ingredients and be pre- pared and presented in a unique or intriguing way, and at least two of the primary ingredients must also be sourced from within 100km of the entrant’s outlet to provide a distinct local element. Dishes must be matched with Monteith’s beer and cider. The winner will bag the title and $15,000 cash. All hunter and gatherer chefs across the land are encouraged to register their wild dish with a Monteith’s pair- ing before Friday, May 31. Are you ‘game’ enough to answer the call of the wild?
