Global colour authority, The Pantone Institute, has selected emerald as its colour of 2013 because it symbolises growth, renewal, prosperity and healing, according to Leatrice Elseman, executive director of Pantone. It is superceding Tangerine Tango of 2012, a bright reddish orange which the institute says provided the energy boost needed to recharge and move forward. “Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today’s complex world,” Leatrice says. “Green is the most abundant hue in nature — the human eye sees more green than any other colour in the spectrum.” Since antiquity, the luminous hue has been the colour of beauty and new life in many cultures and religions. For centuries, many countries have chosen green to represent healing and unity. When the fashion industry embraced the arrival of emerald, the institute recognised that the understated sophistication of emerald would trickle into home accessories, wall treatments, paint colours and fabrics. Deep green has long symbolised prosperity and good fortune, with an elegance that can create a luxurious feel to an entryway, powder room, dining room or study, and can bring life to a living room as a feature wall. Suggested ways of using the colour to convey a sense of calm and opulence, include painting a feature wall with emerald green, complimenting it with a few accents in matching or appropriate contrasting colours. While using the colour as a primary tone may be too much for some, it makes an attractive accent when paired with neutrals, such as greys and sandy earth tones. DESIGNER ROOM: Accessories such as throw pillows, bowls, vases, chairs, curtains, can rejuvenate the look of a space while instilling a sense of calm.
