Similarly the dining room booth seats are piled with a cacophony of colourful Balinese cushions. “Who cares if they don’t go together,” Fiona says. “My philosophy is that more is more – nothing hyper-expensive, just to enjoy.” Kitchen cabinetry is dominated by a step-in pantry and sliding door and Fiona has opted for plenty of drawers rather than cupboards. However, the eye is immediately drawn to the various nooks and cranny shelf spaces which house Fiona’s extensive collection of treasures mainly found in charity shops. Sets of scales, a group of teapots and colourful kettles adorn the shelving. “A lot come from Vietnam and we’ve bought a lot locally,” Fiona says. “Wherever we travel, if they have a Hospice or Salvation Army shop, we always go in.” The treasures are offset with works Fiona has painted. Original 1970s features provide unexpected bonuses, for example a stepped open wall between the kitchen and a stairway provides ample space to display more treasures. And the original 70s aluminium window stretching along one side of the kitchen yields a stunning outlook to the bush- clad slopes below the house.
