DID YOU KNOW... FREEBatteryTesting&Fitting Methods of unlocking and starting a car have come a long way – from manual to remote keyless systems – but How- ick Auto Electrical still holds the key to unlock the wonders of technology. Times have certainly changed since the days of the mechanical car key, reminisces co-owner Mark Jones. “The rate at which cars are evolving is almost frightening,” Mark says. “Back when my dad started the business, air conditioning used to be a case of wind- ing the window down! These days we need to scan vehicles to fix almost anything.” In fact, it’s not just a matter of scanning these days for the switched on team. “It’s about reprogramming cars so they can function in today’s world. Systems change and these need updating,” Mark explains. “You wouldn’t expect to use a mobile phone for 10 years, but cars are being used for that amount of time, and more. Like mobile phones, the technology used in the automo- tive industry is constantly evolving.” Established in 1965 by Mark’s father, Howard, Howick Auto Electrical has contin- ued to stay on top of its game despite these changes – one of the biggest being its 1996 move down the road from 20 Moore Street to its current home next to Liquorland. “The business had become much more successful and we needed to expand. At that point we were operating out of three build- ings,” says Mark.“I even had four guys at my garage at home!” Lately, there just haven’t been enough hours in the day for the busy folks at their current premises. “We’ve been incredibly hectic this winter; lots of workshops refer vehicles to us to fix problems that previously couldn’t be fixed.” A particular highlight for Mark is seeing his handiwork zipping around in the area. “We’ve wired hundreds of ambulances and buses – back in the day, nearly 80 to 90 per- cent of ambulances were ours. And some of our buses are still trundling along for How- ick & Eastern Buses and Stagecoach (now Metrolink) after 15 years!” In addition, the auto electrical and mechan- ical specialist is one of only a few in the area that has sophisticated equipment and tech- nology to diagnose specific issues. “It’s an ongoing investment,” says Mark’s business partner, Dion Lowe, who has been with the company since 1997. “They cost a fortune but it’s a necessity for us to advance and stay ahead.” Openness to change is another factor, he adds. “There’s so much to learn in modern electronics and we’re constantly attending training courses and learning about what’s new in the industry.” A one-stop shop covering all vehicle servic- ing, repairs, diagnostics, air-conditioning and WOFs, Howick Auto Electrical also has exper- tise in the marine electrical domain. Despite its breadth of services, acco- lades are common for the team which has won national awards from the Motor Trade Association (MTA) for its dedication to both auto electrical and mechanical excel- lence.
