www.times.co.nz Botany and Ormiston Times, Thursday, November 19, 2015 — 23 There’s always enough food to go round the table at the Fouhy household but space was a different story. “We needed our kitchen to stretch!” says Dianna Fouhy. With six daughters and their respective husbands, three young granddaughters, and another on the way, people were constantly coming and going. “It’s always been a happy kitchen but it could be a bit tight,” says Dianna. “Veronica and Michael live next door and our other daughter lives four doors up the road so it’s so easy to call out and see if anyone’s around who wants tea!” Then, Dianna’s husband, Kieran, thought about removing the adjacent laundry. “Just one day this time last year he said ‘what if we took it out?’” says Dianna. Putting their plan into action, the Fouhys considered someone who would enhance the well-loved kitchen yet maintain the character of their 1920s home. Jag Kitchens in Botany Town Centre’s Danske Mobler Home Centre was the family’s choice. “Our daughter’s boss recently had a Jag kitchen put in, and they were really pleased with it,” says Dianna. Meeting Jag Kitchens designer Liz Martin, Dianna devised a design with input from the whole family. Liz says it was about letting the artistic household express its personality. “I love that there’s art everywhere and just helped Dianna piece together all the elements.” Although modern appliances and functions feature, the heart of the home has not lost its quaint, quirky charm. Modelled after the tongue and groove detailing of the former laundry, it boasts an elegant rimu island, generous drawers, as well as a 1.5 wall oven. Youngest daughter and artist Hannah’s sculpture takes pride of place in one corner and a low-hanging beam is decorated with an eclectic collection of fine china, some inherited from Dianna’s mother. The warm, welcoming space is bathed with natural light streaming in from white French windows contrasting with deep, royal blue walls reminiscent of Dianna’s parents’ house. Art spills from every nook and cranny, the many handmade creations of the Fouhy girls finding a home. The kauri table that the Fouhys bought when they first got married serves as the dining table and a glass pendant light that belonged to Dianna’s mother hangs from above. A light cork panelled floor finishes off the remarkable space, a match Liz helped coordinate. Importantly, Liz has helped create the wonderful work of art. “She’s been absolutely patient. She listened, gave me ideas, showed me options I’d never have thought of and helped me research. She’s just been a joy to work with.” Jag Kitchens specialises in custom-designed kitchens and has its own manufacturing plant.
